The wiley ways of online media

[info]mrcozy and I went this week to hear Anastasia Goodstein, author of Totally Wired talk about "what your kids are doing online". Not that we have kids. I'm not sure why [info]mrcozy wanted to go, though it was nice to have him there. I went because it was a presentation to parents at my school and I wanted to find out what they were being told.

One of the things she talked about is that the New Big Thing online for teens and tweens is avatars. I got coolness points for having heard of Meez (thank you [info]neshura). Club Penguin has made the rounds this year, which is apparently typical for tweens.

I never did take enough time to create a Meez, because the site annoyed me, but after talking to a colleague last night and seeing some today through serendipity, I made a WeeMe.

This weekend has almost nothing scheduled. I'm strongly resisting getting anything scheduled, though I have two different people who wouldn't mind meeting me at work. I need to plan for next week, when I will be gone most of my classes and need sub plans, plus I need to study for my CSET exams next weekend. At the moment, though, I'm enjoying spending the morning in bed surrounded by YA books, laptop, and sunshine.

Makers Faire is in San Mateo next weekend. Are either or both of you going? I'll probably go with [info]purple_pyrate on Saturday.
[info]mrcozy was definitely thinking of going with some friends of ours. The friends have now possibly bowed out, so it is up in the air. I would love to go, but I have a mandatory work picnic on Saturday which I'm ducking out of early to go take 6 hours of tests to prove that I know enough science to teach the fine children of this state. It is entirely possible that I do NOT know enough physics or earth science, so there's a small amount of stress.

Anyway, I suspect that after a pretty intense week of travel and work commitments that I won't want to spend my one day off at the faire. Which is a major bummer - I wish it was a different weekend!
More than anything, I was looking for conversation pieces for when, "and this is why homes should have web filters," comes up at work.

Frankly, your librarian had the best argument against use in public libraries. I already used that on Friday, and it was met with surprise ("wow, I never thought of that").
The husband used to work for Imbee.com - they're doing a lot lot lot of work to make a safe blogging-type environment for tweens. It's good stuff.

ugh.
Tried the Meez, hate the site interface too. Maybe I'll post my attempts tomorrow...
ack. posted my meez attempt in my LJ. Maybe the weemee would be less pretentious looking?
